The transition from traditional telephony to internet-based calling, or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), marks a significant technological shift. Traditional phone systems rely on circuit-switched networks, providing reliable, high-quality voice calls over copper lines but with higher costs and less flexibility. In contrast, VoIP uses packet-switched networks to transmit voice data over the internet or private networks, allowing for more efficient bandwidth use and the integration of various communications forms, including video and text. Key technologies facilitating this shift include codec conversion for translating between analog and digital signals, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for managing communication sessions, Quality of Service (QoS) management to prioritize voice data, and technologies for echo cancellation and noise reduction to improve call quality.
